The feline calicivirus (FCV) manifests itself in cats experiencing eye and/or nasal discharge, lameness, fever, and bleeding from various sites of their body, among other symptoms. As this is a highly contagious infection, it is important to keep your vet clinic, shelter, or pet facility clean, especially if you suspect that a feline has FCV. Having the right pet disinfectant may help minimize the spread of the calicivirus aside from promptly isolating the infected pet.
What Is Calicivirus?
FCV primarily affects a cat’s respiratory system by causing acute upper respiratory infections. While there are other viruses that can cause this in felines, FCV is one of the most common among cats all over the world.
What makes FCV so ubiquitous is the fact that it can be easily spread. Cats who are susceptible to infection can get it through direct contact with an infected cat, or by being exposed to objects that have been contaminated by an infected cat’s secretions such as sneeze droplets. What’s more, people who have touched infected cats or contaminated objects can unwittingly spread the virus to vulnerable felines.
Additionally, even healthy cats can be carriers of FCV, and recovery from the disease can still cause a temporary or permanent carrier state in previously infected cats. Female cats who are carriers of the virus can also transmit this disease onto their newborn litter.
Disinfectants vs Calicivirus
FCV can be especially problematic in multi-animal environments, such as pet sitters, groomers, vet clinics, and other pet establishments. It only takes one cat to infect a whole clowder so keeping your facility sanitized is one prevention method you can practice. This is especially crucial for vet clinics since other sick pets are present and tools such as beds, toys, food bowls, and the like can easily pass FCV onto others.
To clean a vet clinic effectively, make sure to regularly use a veterinary disinfectant. Alpha Tech Pet has a line of products for a thorough vet disinfect session that can keep kennels, other items, and areas of the facility free from 99.9999% of bacteria.
Specially designed for pet care facilities, our pet disinfectant
products can kill calicivirus, remove odor-causing bacteria and prevent bacteria production in kennels. Our pet disinfectants come in various forms such as:
- Sprays
